Taken from a Cambridge slideshow that I taught from today. Ernst Haeckel famously falsified gill slits on his drawings of embryos in order to gain notoriety for finding something outlandish. Around a century later people are still teaching students that embryos all have gills on them. This is false.
Don't get me started on the archeopteryx as well, there is no shortage of birds that are older than it, a swift Google search will help with that.
What does it tell us about fossils and archeology? Taken in isolation, we have no clue what happened before us; the Cambrian explosion bolsters that sentiment as well.
That is where the other realms of science come in to fill in the gaps.
